»If I get scuppered (tears all round and shouts of God forbid) I’ve left some money to be used for NAGH [National Association of Guilds of Help, of which he had previously served as president] or any other old purpose in your absolute discretion: 1000 GBP I think it is but don’t mention it till I’m tuning my harp please«.

»The aim of all those involved in civil society organisations of all kinds is in one way or another to make connections, support each other, to build understanding and empathy, and improve the world around us.« – sagte Frank Heuberger, Beauftragter des Sprecher*innenrates für Europäische Angelegenheiten in seiner Rede.

»It is with great pride and honour that my colleagues and I stand here today side by side with you and our friends from France to commemorate the legacy of Edward Birchall, this convinced volunteer and philanthropist who died not far from here in the battle of the Somme, the cruellest and most loss-making battle of the First World War.

The traces of the two world wars have cast no shadows on our cooperation. We didn't have to turn enemies into friends. For it is never the peoples and civil societies that want to wage war against each other. Hostility arises from the power-hungry and expansionist aspirations of governments that impose war on their peoples.«
